Industry is an on-going documentary and industrial heritage project that documents work and everyday life in government-built and owned industrial estates around Singapore. Constructed between the 1970s – 1980s, these estates were part of the then developing country’s push to develop its industrial economy. Today, these distinctive single storey terrace workshops and industrial shops are home to auto workshops, funeral parlors, recycling companies and other low tech businesses not readily associated with Singapore’s push towards a smart digital economy. Although some of these estates are part of Singapore’s residential landscape, they are unfamiliar to many younger Singaporeans who grew up in an economy dominated by advanced manufacturing and services. As the push towards a digital economy accelerates and with industrial land at a premium, Industry is a record of these industrial estates, their tenants and their workers before these eventually make way for Singapore’s industrial parks of the future.
